Nelson Writes Song for LDS Hymnal

September 24 — The Mormons have added a new song to their hymnal by President Russel M. Nelson. In his song, he praises their god, using KJV English repeatedly. I may never understand why Mormons choose to speak like this in their prayers or songs. I guess they believe it makes them sound holy and reverent.

In his song, he refers to Jesus as an “Exemplar”, then goes on to call him the “atoning son”, “who gave Himself as sacred ransom”. I wrote something not long ago when Elder Quentin L. Cook referred to him as our exemplar.

During my research for this article, I discovered a Relief Society Visiting Teaching Message titled “The Divine Mission of Jesus Christ: Exemplar.” If they mean to say Jesus is their example, why don’t they just say that?

Throughout Nelson’s song, he continues to express his love for Jesus and his sacrifice on their behalf. He writes, “who came to save from death and sin”. Do they really believe these words? Do they really believe that it is Jesus who saves us from spiritual death? If so, why are they continuing to build temples all over the world and encouraging members to do temple work for the dead?

His last line of this song has me perplexed, “May we Thy holy laws fulfill”. I joke with Michelle sometimes about needing a Mormon decoder ring to figure out exactly what they’re talking about. I truly wonder what laws he’s referring to. Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law, and he, himself, fulfilled them.

Matthew 5:17

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

Galatians 3:13

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree”.

The Old Testament tells us that if you break one law, you’ve broken them all. Do Mormons really want to live that way? Jesus freed us from the bondage of the Law; he is the sacrifice that was needed to free us from that bondage.

I pray for them; I pray they will learn the truth.

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes
