Joseph had tricked so many people into believing God had revealed this disgusting deed to him. The truth is that Smith had an insatiable desire for sex and it mattered not if they were married, single, young or old. If he saw a pretty girl or woman he suddenly came up with another revelation. 

With the way Mormon leaders today revere him you have to wonder if they’d be so quick to give up their wives like Grant did then. (Grant’s son (Heber Jeddy Grant), ended up becoming the seventh prophet/president of the Church, and the last known prophet to practice polygamy.
