As I began compiling notes for our look at the talks given at this year’s General Conference, I received a heads up from Melissa telling me about a website she came across promoting ‘The 70 Day President Nelson Study’. The 70 days is based on the 70 talks Mr. Nelson has given at past General Conferences. The idea is that you can learn more about Nelson by reading his talks.

Smith strikes his neighbor’s head “three times with my cane” for insulting him and letting his livestock trespass on Smith’s property. He voluntarily pleads guilty to assault and battery to Mormon justice of the peace. On Christmas night Smith had dreamed of using his cane repeatedly on opponent’s head, “intending to kill him, but was partially prevented from striking him with full force by my wives.” – The Mormon Hierarchy – Extensions of Power by D. Jesus had to Qualify to become Our Redeemer

Teachings of the Presidents of the Church, Ezra Taft Benson, p. 92; “Even though He was God’s Son sent to earth, the divine plan of the Father required that Jesus be subjected to all the difficulties and tribulations of mortality. … To qualify as the Redeemer of all our Father’s children, Jesus had to be perfectly obedient to all the laws of God. Because He subjected Himself to the will of the Father, He grew “from grace to grace, until he received a fulness” of the Father’s power. Thus He had “all power, both in heaven and on earth.” (D&C 93:13, 17.)10 Because [ Jesus] was God—even the Son of God—He could carry the weight and burden of other men’s sins on Himself.”

Journal of Discourses 4:297; “It was not for me to question whether Joseph was dictated by the Lord at all times and under all circumstances or not… He was called of God; God dictated him, and if He had a mind to leave him to himself and let him commit an error, that was no business of mine. And it was not for me to question it, if the Lord was disposed to let Joseph lead the people astray, for He had called him and instructed him to gather Israel and restore the Priesthood and kingdom to them. It was not my prerogative to call him in question with regard to any act of his life.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, March 29, 1857

September 21 – John 14:16-18; “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”

Brigham to be President
Journal of Discourses 5:219; “…as for our enemies, they have cursed themselves with all the curses they can bear; and the cursing that are on them they never can get off, neither can those who sustain them. The Church and kingdom to which we belong will become the kingdom of our God and his Christ, and brother Brigham Young will become President of the United States. [Voices responded, “Amen.”]” – Heber C. Kimball, Salt Lake City, September 6, 1856
Romans 3:13-18; “Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Blessings of Exaltation
Gospel Principles, pg 277; “What are some blessings that will be given to those who are exalted? Our Heavenly Father is perfect, and He glories in the fact that it is possible for His children to become like Him. His work and glory is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39).
Those who receive exaltation in the celestial kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ will receive special blessings. The Lord has promised, “All things are theirs” (D&C 76:59). These are some of the blessings given to exalted people:
1. They will live eternally in the presence of Heavenly Father and
Jesus Christ (see D&C 76:62).
2. They will become gods (see D&C 132:20–23).
3. They will be united eternally with their righteous family members and will be able to have eternal increase.
4. They will receive a fulness of joy.
5. They will have everything that our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have—all power, glory, dominion, and knowledge (see D&C 132:19–20).
President Joseph Fielding Smith wrote: “The Father has promised through the Son that all that he has shall be given to those who are obedient to His commandments. They shall increase in knowledge, wisdom, and power, going from grace to grace, until the fulness of the perfect day shall burst upon them.”

Keys of the Kingdom
D&C 27:1, 12, 13; “Listen to the voice of Jesus Christ, your Lord, your God, and your Redeemer, whose word is quick and powerful. 12 … I have ordained you and confirmed you to be apostles, and especial witnesses of my name, and bear the keys of your ministry and of the same things which I revealed unto them; 13 Unto whom I have committed the keys of my kingdom, and a dispensation of the gospel for the last times; and for the fulness of times, in the which I will gather together in one all things, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth.”

“A First Presidency letter dated October 8, 2012, encourages members to perform essential ordinances for their own ancestors when attending the temple. Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles provided additional information on this subject during his October 2012 general conference address.

No Polygamy for Joseph Smith, Sr.
Father of the Prophet, pg 74; “There are in the Church both ordained and natural patriarchs. An ordained patriarch holds the office of patriarch-called an “evangelical minister” in the revelation and gives patriarchal blessings to worthy members of the Church. By definition, a natural patriarch is one who has entered into the patriarchal order of celestial marriage in the house of the Lord, receiving for himself the blessings of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob… Father Smith was ordained as the Patriarch to the Church by the Prophet Joseph Smith on December 18, 1833…”

Belief on Whose Name?
Journal of Discourses 6:229; “Now, brethren, this is a consolation to us all. Believe in God, believe in Jesus, and believe in Joseph his Prophet, and in Brigham his successor. And I add, “If you will believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph was a Prophet, and that Brigham was his successor, you shall be saved in the kingdom of God,” which I pray, in the name of Jesus, may be the case. Amen.” – Joseph Young, Salt Lake City, July 26, 1857

Elders to Save American Constitution in Joseph’s Lifetime
Journal of Discourses 6:152; “It is said that brother Joseph in his lifetime declared that the Elders of this Church should step forth at a particular time when the Constitution should be in danger, and rescue it, and save it. This may be so; but I do not recollect that he said exactly so. I believe he said something like this—that the time would come when the Constitution and the country would be in danger of an overthrow; and said he, If the Constitution be saved at all, it will be by the Elders of this Church. I believe this is about the language, as nearly as I can recollect it.” – Orson Hyde, Salt Lake City, January 3, 1858

Doctrines of Salvation 3:74; “GARDEN OF EDEN AND CITY ZION SAME PLACE. In accord with the revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, we teach that the Garden of Eden was on the American continent located where the City Zion, or the New Jerusalem, will be built. When Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden, they eventually dwelt at a place called Adam-ondi-Ahman, situated in what is now Daviess County, Missouri.”

Journal of Discourses 17:310; “Perhaps some may inquire—”Do you believe, then, that the Christian Church has been so overcome that it has not existed on the earth?” That is what we believe, that is one of the principles taught by this people during the last forty-four years of the existence of this Church.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, February 28, 1875

Earth Fell into the Universe when Adam Fell
Ensign, March 1997; “According to President Brigham Young, Abraham 5:13 [Abr. 5:13] also means that before the Fall of Adam, the earth was near the very throne of God. But when the Fall occurred, the earth literally fell or moved from the physical presence of God to its present position in our solar system. When all the effects of the Fall of Adam are finally overcome, the earth will literally move back into the presence of God.” – Andrew Skinner

Bible has Errors, Book of Mormon does not
The Joseph Smith Translation, p. 12; “…the Book of Mormon remains secure, unchanged and unchangeable, a firm and steady witness of Christ and his doctrine. The Book of Mormon has been, is now, and will forever remain secure in the hands of the servants of the Lord, for which we are immeasurably grateful. But with the Bible it was not and is not so. It is now in the hands of intellectuals and unbelievers and ministers whose delight it is to twist and pervert its doctrines and to spiritualize away the plain meanings of all its important parts. And it once was in the sole and exclusive care and custody of an abominable organization, founded by the devil himself, likened prophetically unto a great whore, whose great aim and purpose was to destroy the souls of men in the name of religion.” – Monte S. Nyman, Charles D. Tate, Jr.

Divine Mission of Joseph Smith
Doctrines of Salvation 1:188; “If Joseph Smith was a deceiver, who wilfully attempted to mislead the people, then he should be exposed; his claims should be refuted, and his doctrines shown to be false, for the doctrines of an impostor cannot be made to harmonize in all particulars with divine truth. If his claims and declarations were built upon fraud and deceit, there would appear many errors and contradictions, which would be easy to detect. The doctrines of false teachers will not stand the test when tried by the accepted standards of measurement, the scriptures.” – Joseph Fielding Smith
