December 30 — If the glory of God is intelligence, then what should we make of 1 Corinthians 13:8

“Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.”

Does this mean that God’s glory will vanish?

According to Mormonism it has nothing to do with the Lord. (more…)

December 28 — General Conference, October 1, 1967 “Gratitude to Mother Eve …One of these days, if I ever get to where I can speak to Mother Eve, I want to thank her for tempting Adam to partake of the fruit. He accepted the temptation, with the result that children came into this world. And when I kneel in prayer, I feel to thank Mother Eve, for if she hadn’t had that influence over Adam, and if Adam had done according to the commandment first given to him, they would still be in the Garden of Eden and we would not be here at all. We wouldn’t have come into this world. So the commentators made a great mistake when they put in the Bible at the top of page 3, as I think it is (it may not be the same page in every Bible), the statement “Man’s shameful fall.”” — Joseph Fielding Smith (more…)

December 27 — Promptings of the Sprit, pg. 83 “There are also certain activities that encourage heaven to grant that initial, clear, and unmistakable outpouring of the Spirit. Some examples are as follows: reading the Book of Mormon, reading other scriptures, attending regular Church meetings, missionary work, service to others, temple work, family gatherings, visiting the sick and shut-ins, writing in our journals, and other righteous pursuits. Anything that is praiseworthy, lovely, or of good report encourages the presence of the Spirit. The Lord is eager to bless us as we are actively engaged in worthy pursuits. However, studying the Book of Mormon is surely at the top of the list.” — Errol R. Fish (more…)

December 22 — Numbers 24:17 “I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.”

Matthew 2:8-12 “And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.” (more…)

December 21 — Journal of Discourses 10:258 – 259 “God is managing the affairs of all nations, and He has made known his will and pleasure to his servants the Prophets; He has given unto them the Everlasting Gospel, which they have received by the principle of revelation, and can by that means draw aside the curtain of futurity, and contemplate events as they are rolling forth, and understand the designs of Jehovah in relation to them; and these men have been sent forth to tell the people of all nations the things that are coming on them.” — John Taylor, delivered in the Tabernacle, Great Salt Lake City, October 10, 1863.  December 19 — Encyclopedia of Mormonism, p. 1229 “Reverence is expected to pervade public places of worship as well. Because Latter-day Saints tend to be vibrant and sociable and because they often worship with their children, the Church leaders periodically emphasize the importance of reverence.

Addressing the issue, President Gordon B. Hinckley stated, “We encourage the cultivation of friends with happy conversations among our people. However, these should take place in the foyer, and when we enter the chapel we should understand that we are in sacred precincts…. All who come into the Lord’s house should have a feeling they are walking and standing on holy ground” (Ensign 17 [May 1987]:45).” (more…)

December 18 – Micah 5:2; “But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

Micah’s prophecy was fulfilled shortly after Jesus’ birth. Noteworthy are the reactions of the priests and scribes after the magi answered King Herod’s question! (more…)

December 17 — I often wonder what Mormons think of the passage of scripture in John when Nicodemus asked Jesus what he must do to be born again. While we’ve explored this issue in our Mormon Dilemmas section before, today I began wondering about another angle to this scenario.

If Jesus told Nicodemus he had to be born again then how are dead people born again?

John 3:3 “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (more…)

In the Lord’s Church, the members are Latter-day Saints, and they attempt to emulate the Savior, follow His teachings, and receive saving ordinances in order to live in the celestial kingdom with God the Father and our Savior Jesus Christ (see 2 Nephi 9:18).” – Quentin L.  December 6 – Isaiah 42:1-9 “Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. 5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. 8I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. 9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.” (more…)

December 1 — Gospel Principles, p. 241 “What happens to us after we die? Heavenly Father prepared a plan for our salvation. As part of this plan, He sent us from His presence to live on earth and receive mortal bodies of flesh and blood. Eventually our mortal bodies will die, and our spirits will go to the spirit world. The spirit world is a place of waiting, working, learning, and, for the righteous, resting from care and sorrow. Our spirits will live there until we are ready for our resurrection. Then our mortal bodies will once more unite with our spirits, and we will receive the degree of glory we have prepared for.” (more…)
