December 17 — I often wonder what Mormons think of the passage of scripture in John when Nicodemus asked Jesus what he must do to be born again. While we’ve explored this issue in our Mormon Dilemmas section before, today I began wondering about another angle to this scenario.

If Jesus told Nicodemus he had to be born again then how are dead people born again?

John 3:3 “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (more…)

October 28 — He got one right!!! It’s not very often I get to report on finding a prophecy of Joseph Smith that he got right, but today I found one. As I was researching quotes of Joseph Smith, I came across the prophecy he gave in Doctrines and Covenants.

D&C 3:4 “For although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him.”

Joseph gave that prophecy in Harmony, Pennsylvania in July 1828. (more…)

September 15 — D&C 124:29-30 “For a baptismal font there is not upon the earth, that they, my saints, may be baptized for those who are dead—For this ordinance belongeth to my house, and cannot be acceptable to me, only in the days of your poverty, wherein ye are not able to build a house unto me.” (more…)

August 31 — Was Joseph Smith Possessed? D&C 132:7 “…by revelation and commandment through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power (and I have appointed unto my servant Joseph to hold this power in the last days, and there is never but one on the earth at a time on whom this power and the keys of this priesthood are conferred)…” [emp. added] (more…)

This question should be one of the most important questions to ask the Mormon people.  The LDS Church says that “priesthood is power” so this means they view themselves as the only authority to speak for and act in behalf of God.

I had the privilege of asking my dear friend Ed Decker to write a chapter in my mentoring handbook and so we’re answering our dilemma question today with Ed’s contribution!

‘For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.’ 1 Timothy 1:12

I finally made the break after spending 30 years in the Church, and accepted Jesus as my Savior and God in 1993. One of the main things that played a major part in making my decision was God’s word.

At my ‘Confirmation Ceremony’ at the age of eight, the bishopric literally patted me on the head, gave me a Bible, and told me to go home and read it.*

I thought they were serious, and did just what they said. Unbeknownst to me, I shouldn’t have taken them so seriously. During my very young impressionable years, God spoke to me through His word on several occasions. (more…)

Warning for those contemplating membership in the Mormon Church!

Question of the Day:

What happens to people who die before having had a chance to hear the gospel?

Today we’re looking over LDS prophecies concerning the fate of mankind; LDS, and otherwise.

As we look over LDS canon, we can clearly see how Smith’s directives evolved over time. In the beginning stages of his preaching, the fate of those who didn’t fully obey the gospel was clearly defined. His signature canon, the Book of Mormon published in 1830, declared there are no 2nd chances. His chronic contradictions were implemented to create confusion, not peace.

‘For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.’ 1 Corinthians 1:18

Joseph Smith made an incredible claim about his version of the gospel no one should overlook. We can read his so-called prophecy about the Book of Mormon in his other work, the Doctrine and Covenants.

Doctrine and Covenants 20:9 “Which contains a record of a fallen people, and the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to the Jews also”.

Today our question is this — (more…)

Leviticus 27:30 “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord.”

Last week we came across an interesting article on Reddit where someone posted a request for info on all the definitions for tithing the Church has used over the years.

He listed a few examples from LDS canon, and offered a small monetary reward if someone could add to his list. As you might imagine, the Church’s definition of tithes is all over the board. Today we’re comparing part of that list with God’s word.

One thing is certain. The Church has gone to great extremes in confusing its membership. Check out what they’ve said – (more…)

Journal of Discourses 16:156 “And when the Lord was about to have the Book of Covenants given to the world it was thought wisdom, in consequence of the persecutions of our enemies in Kirtland and some of the regions around, that some of the names should be changed, and Joseph was called Baurak Ale, which was a Hebrew word; meaning God bless you.” – Orson Pratt, Ogden, August 16, 1873 (more…)
