Adam & Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
The Man Adam, p 84 “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and he sweat as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (JST, Luke 22:41-44.) Elder Bruce R. McConkie postulated that this angel was likely Adam. If this angel was Adam (and there seems to be no reason to doubt it), here was the Messiah in the Garden of Gethsemane in his greatest of all trials, shedding his blood to redeem mankind from the effects of Adam’s transgression in the Garden of Eden and also from the results of each person’s own sins. There appeared from heaven to strengthen him the very person of Adam himself-he who brought mortality and blood and death and sin into the world. The parallel issue is unmistakable!
The plan of salvation to which both Adam and Jesus subscribed in the premortal world was being worked out in the world of Adam’s posterity. Each had fulfilled his foreordained part, and now the two principals were together as Jesus triumphed over sin and mortality. The next day Jesus would die upon the cross, and three days later he would rise from the grave, totally triumphant, not only over the death of the body but also over the death of the spirit-which is alienation from God.” – Joseph Fielding McConkie, Robert L. Joseph Smith made an incredible claim about his version of the gospel no one should overlook. We can read his so-called prophecy about the Book of Mormon in his other work, the Doctrine and Covenants.

Online LDS Bible Dictionary; “Crucifixion, A Roman form of punishment, usually inflicted only on slaves and the lowest criminals. The Lord was condemned to it at the request of the mob on a nominal charge of sedition against Caesar. The purple robe, the crown of thorns, and other insults to which He was subjected were illegal. The punishment was preceded by scourging. The criminal was made to carry his own cross to the place of execution, which was always outside the city. His clothing was the perquisite of the soldiers who carried out the sentence. The cross was driven into the ground so that the feet of the prisoner were a foot or two above the surface. The cross was watched by four soldiers at a time until death took place, which was sometimes not until the third day.”

The Crucifixion
I’m often told by members of the LDS Church that I’ve lied about not knowing anything in reference to Good Friday. I can assure everyone that I was indeed ignorant of the entire event, which in turn grieves my heart even today.
In light of all that we’re taking another poll – it’d be interesting to find out just how much people know about Good Friday, Mormon or otherwise. So here we go –

Wednesday after sundown is actually the beginning of Thursday on the Jewish calendar, and the day Jesus instructed His disciples to go ready the room for the Passover meal in the city. The events of what took place in this one scenario are nothing short of amazing so check this out!!!
Luke 22:7-13; “Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the Passover must be killed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the Passover that we may eat. 9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? 10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. 11 And ye shall say unto the good man of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guest chamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples? 12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. 13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the Passover.”

A couple of weeks ago my pastor spoke on taking risks and what our responsibilities are as members of the church of Jesus Christ. He based his sermon on the passage above and of course I began thinking about the Mormons. For this article I have two objectives to explore and they are;

Good Friday
Today I thought I’d remind the Christian community there is no recognition or observance of Good Friday in Mormonism. I remember as a child growing up in Utah I had three non-Mormon friends and on Good Friday they’d never be able to come out and play like they did the other days of Easter Break. I don’t recall asking them why, but I do remember thinking they celebrated some strange day just before Easter they always called “Good Friday”.

“What is the Atonement?
As used in the scriptures, to atone is to suffer the penalty for sins, thereby removing the effects of sin from the repentant sinner and allowing him or her to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ was the only one capable of carrying out the Atonement for all mankind. Because of his Atonement, all people will be resurrected, and those who obey His gospel will receive the gift of eternal life with God.”

I came across a speech given by Dallin Oaks which was then published in the New Era Magazine by the LDS Church and wanted to share it with our visitors. There were several items of interest in this one speech, but for now we’re looking at just the first paragraph.
