The Cross and The Atonement

Today we’re looking at the Cross…at Calvary.  For the Christian, it’s the place where we find peace, as we know this is where God gave His Only Son to die in our stead.

A sacrifice had to be made to pay for our sin, and God, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, paid that price for us because of His love.  For God so loved the world…  John 3:16

Jesus Crucified for Our Sins

1 Nephi 11:33; “And I, Nephi, saw that he was lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world.”

Doctrines of Salvation 1:132; “We will never be able to pay the debt. The gratitude of our hearts should be filled to overflowing in love and obedience for his great and tender mercy. For what he has done, we should never fail him. He bought us with a price, the price of his great suffering and the spilling of his blood in sacrifice on the cross.”

Adam and Eve’s Sin and the New Mormon Website

    In my daily LDS Gems e-mails I received notice today (February 26, 2008) of another new website launched by the Church.  Here in part is what it said;

“The new site is a helpful resource for anyone who wishes to know firsthand what Latter-day Saints believe about Jesus Christ. It is also a valuable reference that Church members can use as they share their beliefs with others.”

THE ATONEMENT

Answers to Gospel Questions 4:17; “To many, like the writer, such a custom is repugnant and contrary to the true worship of our Redeemer. Why should we bow down before a cross or use it as a symbol? Because our Savior died on the cross, the wearing of crosses is to most Latter-day Saints in very poor taste and inconsistent to our worship.”

      For many of us there has been a time or two in life when we knew things were about to change.  This happened to me several years ago as I sat listening to a pastor challenge his audience about their personal knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Life as I knew it up to that point was radically different than what I was about to embark upon!

December 28 – Isaiah 52:13; “Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.”

_____

The Bible makes it very clear as to who is exalted and who shall be abased.  The theme throughout His word is the same; when you lift yourself up, He will make sure you don’t hold that position for long.  The Gnostics of the Biblical age were the group of Christians who had been expelled from the church.  They claimed they were the only true Christians and salvation came through intelligence gained by yourself which elevated and exalted you to a higher status than the rest of the believers.  They believed you received this intellectual status through secret teachings.  Hmm…this sounds very familiar with something else I know!

There’s nothing new under the sun.  Ecc. 1:9-10.

Where is our Beloved Kinsman Redeemer in all this?

Are the marks in His hands making a mark in your life?  If so, how?

What do they mean to you personally?

When you think upon the baby in the manger can you lower yourself enough to bow at His holy bed?  Can you honestly believe in your heart that this isn’t about you?  Why does it always have to be about sex?  What does that have to do with being saved?

“To Latter-day Saints, exaltation is a state that a person can attain in becoming like God-salvation in the ultimate sense (D&C 132:17). Latter-day Saints believe that all mankind (except the sons of perdition) will receive varying degrees of glory in the afterlife. Exaltation is the greatest of all the gifts and attainments possible. It is available only in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom and is reserved for members of the Church of the Firstborn. This exalted status, called eternal life, is available to be received by a man and wife. It means not only living in God’s presence, but receiving power to do as God does, including the power to bear children after the resurrection (TPJS, pp. 300-301; D&C 132:19). Blessings and privileges of exaltation require unwavering faith, repentance, and complete obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ.”  Encyclopedia of Mormonism, 1-4 vols, 479.

December 26 –  1 Corinthians 1:18; “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

_____

This verse has always been my call to arms so to speak.  The Mormon cannot stand talking about the cross so the more I engage them in conversation, the more I bring up the subject of the cross.  I like to show them this verse and then 1 Cor. 15:1-5; they soon see they are without excuse and besides once again, it gives them something to think about.

If you’re a Christian you worship a God not confined to a man made grave.  You worship a God who raised His dead Son and brought Him back to life.

There are so many biblical references to sacrifices needing to be made for man’s sin and each of them are a foreshadowing of what was to come through God’s own sacrifice of His Son.  Why would the Garden of Gethsemane qualify?  And where in scripture can we see that the Garden of Gethsemane would fulfill the sacrifice God demanded for righteousness?  These are the questions I would ask the Mormon.

“GREATEST SUFFERING WAS IN GETHSEMANE. We speak of the passion of Jesus Christ. A great many people have an idea that when he was on the cross, and nails were driven into his hands and feet, that was his great suffering. His great suffering was before he ever was placed upon the cross. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane that the blood oozed from the pores of his body: “Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit-and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink,” That was not when he was on the cross; that was in the garden. That is where he bled from every pore in his body.”  Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols. 1: 130.

     As is usually the case, I came across something interesting in the Book of Mormon while looking for something else.  This time I was reminded of what the Nephites thought of Jesus and His skin color in 3 Nephi 19:30;

And when Jesus had spoken these words he came again unto his disciples; and behold they did pray steadfastly, without ceasing, unto him; and he did smile upon them again; and behold they were white, even as Jesus.”
