March 17 — Calvary Rejected For Joseph Smith’s Lies. Genesis 22:2, 14 “And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.” (more…)

Answers to Gospel Questions 3:207 “Question: “Why did Christ have to shed his blood in the atonement to relieve us of the responsibility of the fall?”

Answer: The reason that the blood of Christ had to be shed is because Adam was without blood before the fall. The blood came into his body afterwards. Therefore, it was necessary that the blood which came by the fall should be shed in the atonement.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

The Continuous Atonement “Just as a man does not really desire food until he is hungry, so he does not desire the salvation of Christ until he knows why he needs Christ. No one adequately and properly knows why he needs Christ until he understands and accepts the doctrine of the Fall and its effects upon all mankind” —Brad Wilcox, 2009 (more…)

General Conference, ‘Jesus Christ Our Redeemer’, April 1997 “The Atonement will not only help us overcome our transgressions and mistakes, but in His time, it will resolve all inequities of life—those things that are unfair which are the consequences of circumstance or others’ acts and not our own decisions.” — Richard G.  The Mortal Messiah, pp. 127-128 “And as he came out of the Garden, delivering himself voluntarily into the hands of wicked men, the victory had been won. There remained yet the shame and the pain of his attest, his trials, and his cross. But all these were overshadowed by the agonies and sufferings in Gethsemane. It was on the cross that he ‘suffered death in the flesh,’ even as many have suffered agonizing deaths, but it was in Gethsemane that ‘he suffered the pain of all men, that all men might repent and come unto him’” (more…)

Adam & Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

The Man Adam, p 84 “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and he sweat as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (JST, Luke 22:41-44.) Elder Bruce R. McConkie postulated that this angel was likely Adam. If this angel was Adam (and there seems to be no reason to doubt it), here was the Messiah in the Garden of Gethsemane in his greatest of all trials, shedding his blood to redeem mankind from the effects of Adam’s transgression in the Garden of Eden and also from the results of each person’s own sins. There appeared from heaven to strengthen him the very person of Adam himself-he who brought mortality and blood and death and sin into the world. The parallel issue is unmistakable!

The plan of salvation to which both Adam and Jesus subscribed in the premortal world was being worked out in the world of Adam’s posterity. Each had fulfilled his foreordained part, and now the two principals were together as Jesus triumphed over sin and mortality. The next day Jesus would die upon the cross, and three days later he would rise from the grave, totally triumphant, not only over the death of the body but also over the death of the spirit-which is alienation from God.” – Joseph Fielding McConkie, Robert L. Millett

Galatians 3:13-14 “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

Mormon Doctrine, p. 46; “When the prophets speak of an infinite atonement, they mean just that. Its effects cover all men, the earth itself and all forms of life thereon, and reach out into the endless expanses of eternity.” – Bruce R. McConkie

reflections on Christ - crucifixionThe title of our post today actually serves as the question we have for Mormons. Why did Jesus shed His blood? Some might say it’s the most important question there is in all the world. Let’s explore God’s word…

In the book of Matthew, Jesus spoke about this very subject  –

Matthew 26:28 “ …this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Our question for the Mormon is: Why?

Why was blood necessary?

Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

Romans 6:23; “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The Ministry of Prophets and Apostles Today, ‘Our Savior’s Atonement’, February 19, 2016 M. Russell Ballard, Apostle

crucifixion-propheciesEarlier this year, Mormon apostle Russell Ballard delivered a speech about the atonement of Christ. We’ve taken the main comments he made and used them in this article to expose how the Church erroneously defines the word ‘atonement’.

Exodus 20:4; “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”

graven-imageEnsign, “Gratitude,” May 1997 [April General Conference], 33; “I express gratitude and love for Jesus Christ and His Atonement, for His willingness to leave the realms of the heavens as a God and come to earth as a lowly babe.

In the final hours of His mortal life, He went into the Garden of Gethsemane and took upon Himself the sins of all mankind, from Adam until the last person born on earth.” – Jerald L. Taylor

salt lake mormon temple 2Alma 42:23; “But God ceaseth not to be God, and mercy claimeth the penitent, and mercy cometh because of the atonement; and the atonement bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead; and the resurrection of the dead bringeth back men into the presence of God; and thus they are restored into his presence, to be judged according to their works, according to the law and justice.”

THE ATONEMENT

Answers to Gospel Questions 4:17; “To many, like the writer, such a custom is repugnant and contrary to the true worship of our Redeemer. Why should we bow down before a cross or use it as a symbol? Because our Savior died on the cross, the wearing of crosses is to most Latter-day Saints in very poor taste and inconsistent to our worship.”

For many of us there has been a time or two in life when we knew things were about to change.  This happened to me several years ago as I sat listening to a pastor challenge his audience about their personal knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Life as I knew it up to that point was radically different than what I was about to embark upon!
