June 5 — I’ve been listening to a Bible study on the book of Hebrews. We were in chapter 12 today, the teacher was talking about what happens to someone who is crucified and the reasons the Romans chose this method of execution. As I listened to him describe it, I wondered if Mormons understand how brutal this was for Jesus, and if they do, would they still be running off to their temples.
Those who were crucified didn’t die from blood loss, dehydration, or exposure to the elements. They died from suffocation, which was a slow way to die. If Mormons know how awful and painful this was for Jesus, would they say, “Thank you, Jesus, but sorry, we still need to do works of salvation for ourselves and for the dead in the temple. Your work just isn’t enough to allow us to become our own god and a god of our own world”?
It’s very sad that living in the presence of God for eternity just isn’t good enough; they want godhood. What’s worse is that, by their own doctrine, they say the devil was right and that he told the truth to Eve (Genesis 3:1–5). Look at what they do in the temple: in part of the endowment ceremony, Satan commands the audience (Adam & Eve) to put on the fig apron. Later, God sheds the blood of animals to make a proper covering for Adam and Eve to cover their sin and shame. The undergarments Mormons wear represent that covering. Then the audience is told to put the fig apron Satan commanded them to put on in the beginning of the ceremony back on over the covering God made. Make sense of that for me, because I don’t get it.
The 3rd Article of Faith states:
We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
They believe they are saved through works and obedience to Mormon doctrine, not through the blood of Jesus Christ. Remember, when they say “saved,” it doesn’t mean living with God for eternity; it means godhood.
They also believe that Jesus’ sacrifice only made it possible for them to have eternal life.
In a 2025 Easter message, Dallin H. Oaks said:
“It is made possible by the great plan and the boundless love of God the Father and our Savior Jesus Christ.”
Made possible? How about “It is finished”? Jesus said these words before he died on the cross.
John 19:30: “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Who should we believe, Mormon doctrine and their leaders, or God? Jesus is the only way to true salvation; we aren’t going to get there through our own works or temple ceremonies.
These were just some random thoughts I had as I was doing my Bible study. I pray the Mormon people wake up and come to know the real Jesus and what he has done for them.
In Christ,
Melissa Grimes
