‘For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.’ 1 Corinthians 1:18

 Now that conference is in our rearview mirror, we’re taking a look at some of the things LDS leaders announced. We’re beginning our look with one of the last talks which was given by Jeffrey Holland.

What caught my attention about this talk was the subject matter. Mr. Holland decided to explain why they don’t use the cross as a symbol of their faith. His reason was the same thing they’ve said in the past but he said nothing about the Moroni statue or the new Christus statue they proudly emphasized in April 2020 General Conference. (more…)

 Mormon Doctrine, pp. 314-315 (1958) Harlots. See Church of the Devil, Sex Immorality. Literally an harlot is a prostitute; figuratively it is any apostate church. Nephi, speaking of harlots in the literal sense and while giving a prophetic description of the Catholic Church, recorded that he ‘saw the devil that he was the foundation of it.’ … Then speaking of harlots in the figurative sense, he designated the Catholic Church as ‘the mother of harlots’ (1 Nephi 13:34; 14:15-17), a title which means that the protestant churches, the harlot daughters which broke off from the great and abominable church, would themselves be apostate churches.” – Bruce R. McConkie [emp. added]

 2 Nephi 9:18 “But, behold, the righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have believed in the Holy One of Israel, they who have endured the crosses of the world, and despised the shame of it, they shall inherit the kingdom of God, which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world, and their joy shall be full forever.”

Galatians 5:11; “And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.”

Ensign, May 1975, p. 92; “…“If you do not use the cross, what is the symbol of your religion?” I replied that the lives of our people must become the only meaningful expression of our faith and, in fact, therefore, the symbol of our worship.” – Gordon B. Hinckley

‘A faith that can’t be tested can’t be trusted.’ – Adrian Rogers

cross-of-christ General Conference, April 2004, “The Atonement: All for All”; “The Lord restored His gospel through Joseph Smith because there had been an apostasy. Since the fifth century, Christianity taught that Adam and Eve’s Fall was a tragic mistake, which led to the belief that humankind has an inherently evil nature. That view is wrong—not only about the Fall and human nature, but about the very purpose of life.” – Bruce C. Hafen

Introduction to the Gospel, p. 312; “…In the restoration, man was raised to the dignity which he had formerly known…Original sin and human depravity were done away with and in their place came again Jesus’ high regard for the dignity of man, the worth of every individual as a child of God, and great emphasis on man’s freedom and accompanying moral responsibility…in the Latter-day Saint teaching of salvation which reveals a fine balance between the grace of Deity and man’s individual merit.” – Lowell Bennion

Colossians 1:20: “And, having made peace through the blood of the cross…”

reflections on Christ - crucifixionToday we’re looking at events that took place at Jesus’ crucifixion. Comparisons of what the Book of Mormon, and the Bible says are fascinating indeed!

Note: Other than providing LDS links within the text of our reference today, no other modifications were made.

Answers to Gospel Questions 3:45; “The Three Days of Darkness …

Question: “In Luke 23:44, it states that at the crucifixion of Jesus there was a period of darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour, but in the Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 8:22-23, it states that a three-day period of darkness came upon the land at the death of Jesus. Which of the two accounts is considered accurate, or are they both accurate? If so, how could this be?”

1 Corinthians 1:18-19; “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

Cross 1 Cor 1 18Ensign, ‘The Meaning of the Cross for Latter-day Saints,’ July 2011; “Is the cross important to our faith?  The answer is an unequivocal yes! The Redeemer’s suffering on the cross is vitally important to us and is an inseparable part of the Atonement, through which He suffered and died for our sins and thereby provided us with a clear path to salvation and exaltation.” – Gregory A. Schwitzer

Cross Oswald Chambers April 6Today’s post is based on a page from our websites, and Oswald Chamber’s ‘My Utmost for His Highest’ devotional for April 6, ‘The Collision of God and Sin’.

Before I begin, allow me to start off by stating this one subject (the cross) will bring me to my knees faster than anything I’ve ever known in this world. When I think of the totality of what our sweet Jesus went through, and the depravity of my sinful life, I’m left with nothing but adoration for the God I love so.

I’m not an eloquent enough orator to express my relief in knowing He’d allow me in His presence. The incarnate God who knew no sin, came here to earth specifically to ransom me – the dark girl from Utah.

crosses 3Luke 9:23-25; “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?”

A couple of weeks ago my pastor spoke on taking risks and what our responsibilities are as members of the church of Jesus Christ. He based his sermon on the passage above and of course I began thinking about the Mormons. For this article   I have two objectives to explore and they are;

What did Jesus mean when He said ‘pick up your cross’?

What does this phrase mean for the Mormon?

Cross5This past week has brought some interesting e-mails from several Mormons and I’ve noticed there was a theme running throughout most of them – the cross.  Several of those who’ve taken the time out of their busy days have pointed out they don’t hate it.  I thought it was interesting in light of their official doctrinal views to the cross so I wrote an article about it – you can access the PDF here.

Know that we’re praying for the Mormon people. Our hearts cry out for your salvation and the peace only Jesus can give to you through His death on that cross and His glorious resurrection!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle Grim
