‘For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.’ 1 Corinthians 1:18
Now that conference is in our rearview mirror, we’re taking a look at some of the things LDS leaders announced. We’re beginning our look with one of the last talks which was given by Jeffrey Holland.
What caught my attention about this talk was the subject matter. Mr. Holland decided to explain why they don’t use the cross as a symbol of their faith. His reason was the same thing they’ve said in the past but he said nothing about the Moroni statue or the new Christus statue they proudly emphasized in April 2020 General Conference.
Over the years they’ve declared the cross is repugnant, their members are the symbol of their faith or the temples are the symbol of their faith. Their excuses to avoid any mention of the cross are shallow and without merit and in fact reveals why Mormonism isn’t Christian.
Compare Oswald Chambers explanation of the cross with what Holland said and reported in the Sale Lake Trib —
‘…The heart of salvation is the Cross of Christ. The reason salvation is so easy to obtain is that it cost God so much. The Cross was the place where God and sinful man merged with a tremendous collision and where the way to life was opened. But all the cost and pain of the collision was absorbed by the heart of God.’ Oswald Chambers
Salt Lake Tribune “One reason Latter-day Saints do not emphasize the cross as a symbol…stems from our biblical roots. … Because crucifixion was one of the Roman Empire’s most agonizing forms of execution, many early followers of Jesus chose not to highlight that brutal instrument of suffering, …By the fourth and fifth centuries, a cross was being introduced as a symbol of generalized Christianity… but Mormonism is not a generalized Christianity. …being neither Catholic nor Protestant, Latter-day Saints believe that their church is, rather, a restored church, the restored New Testament church…Thus, our origins and authority go back before the time of councils, creeds and iconography…
The most important of all scriptural references to the cross…has nothing to do with pendants or jewelry, with steeples or signposts. It has to do, rather, with the rock-ribbed integrity and stiff moral backbone that Christians should bring to the call Jesus has given to every one of his disciples.”
As stated above the Church will give any excuse why they don’t emphasize the cross which in fact is true Christianity. He should employ some of that stiff moral background to his own life.
As we look at other talks in the next few days, please don’t forget to pray for those who listened to the mountains of lies these people told.
With Love in Christ —
Michelle
[…] Conference Quote: Why Mormons Don’t Use the Cross […]
Let me see if I understand…….Paul is not to be trusted but we should listen to Joseph Smith. Is this the same JS who wrote or dictated at least eight different versions of the ‘first vision’? Mormons, as you pointed out, place Moroni on their temples. Aesop has nothing on them. To know the truth is such a blessing. I praise the name of Jesus and gratefully wear my cross.
