Luke 23:21 “…Crucify him, crucify him!”

Looking over our list of ‘significant items of holy week’ has been an eye opening, if not gut-wrenching experience, has it not?

We saw figs and thieves, palm branches and donkeys. Then we saw oils and boxes, coins and bread. Most of the items are just everyday things, in the everyday life of any person – both then, and now. Completing our list are two last items, which I believe, are the most important of all. The Cross of Christ, and famous last words.

Our submission for today is simple. It’s about Jesus, and I’m borrowing the title of my pastor’s sermon this past week; ‘Famous Last Words’.

In the history of significant world-changing events, nothing compares to what took place with the birth, life, and death of a man from Galilee. No other person in history has affected every person on earth; period. You don’t have to believe He’s God when you look at your calendar each day. However, you should know the history of how we keep track of time changed with His birth.

Matthew 2:2 “Saying, where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”

Today  we’re looking at a small portion of an important talk given by Orson Pratt, interspersed with a few questions. The reason this is important is because Mormons are still saying the same things today Mr. Pratt said 148 years ago. You can use this example when witnessing to Mormons as we approach the holidays!

Journal of Discourses 13:126-127 “It can be reasonably inferred, according to the revelations that we have in the Book of Mormon, that God organized His kingdom, precisely to a day, 1,800 years after the crucifixion. Of course we do not learn this directly from the Book of Mormon; but we learn enough there of data on which to found a calculation. (more…)

Colossians 1:20: “And, having made peace through the blood of the cross…”

reflections on Christ - crucifixionToday we’re looking at events that took place at Jesus’ crucifixion. Comparisons of what the Book of Mormon, and the Bible says are fascinating indeed!

Note: Other than providing LDS links within the text of our reference today, no other modifications were made.

Answers to Gospel Questions 3:45; “The Three Days of Darkness …

Question: “In Luke 23:44, it states that at the crucifixion of Jesus there was a period of darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour, but in the Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 8:22-23, it states that a three-day period of darkness came upon the land at the death of Jesus. Which of the two accounts is considered accurate, or are they both accurate? If so, how could this be?”

Gethsemane and the Atonement

He is Risen; A Prophet’s Testimony, Liahona, April 2012; “I believe that none of us can conceive the full import of what Christ did for us in Gethsemane, but I am grateful every day of my life for His atoning sacrifice in our behalf. At the last moment, He could have turned back. But He did not. He passed beneath all things that He might save all things. In doing so, He gave us life beyond this mortal existence. He reclaimed us from the Fall of Adam. To the depths of my very soul, I am grateful to [the Savior]. He taught us how to live. He taught us how to die. He secured our salvation.” —President Thomas S. Monson

Good Friday

Today I thought I’d remind the Christian community there is no recognition or observance of Good Friday in Mormonism. I remember as a child growing up in Utah I had three non-Mormon friends and on Good Friday they’d never be able to come out and play like they did the other days of Easter Break.  I don’t recall asking them why, but I do remember thinking they celebrated some strange day just before Easter they always called “Good Friday”.
