This was a lie when he spoke the words at the General Conference earlier that year. Polygamy had been deemed illegal so the prophets had indeed led members astray.

It became another lie  just six years later when they allowed blacks into the priesthood.

Think about it.

For over 140 years Mormonism had taught racism was of God and had encouraged people to shun anyone that didn’t have white skin.
