2 Timothy 4:3-4; “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
Brigham’s sermon serves as a classic example of those who have itching ears. What purpose his outlandish story feeds is unknown and unworthy of those wanting to know more about the Lord.
The moral to Mr. Young’s story was filled with stories of Porter Rockwell going into caves and seeing stacks of gold where the Nephites deposited the plates. He also told the Saints it wasn’t for them to waste their time looking for gold in the canyons of Utah. It really had nothing to do with anything of the Lord except to tickle the ears of those listening. They still don’t have proof the golden plates existed.
