Mormon Dilemma 980 Earth Has a Spirit

Journal of Discourses, 5:172; “Some say the earth exists without spirit; I do not believe any such thing; it has a spirit as much as anybody has a spirit. How can anything live, except it has a living spirit? How can the earth produce vegetation, fruits, trees, and every kind of production, if there is no life in it?” – Heber C. Kimball, Salt Lake City, August 23, 1857

Colossians 2:8; “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ”.

Personifying nature or animals is idolatry. This teaching goes along with similar teachings found in the Book of Mormon when they refer to the earth as ‘mother earth’ in 2 Nephi 9:7, Mosiah 2:1 and Mormon 6:15.

The earth does not have a spirit, nor is the earth our ‘mother’!
