General Conference Quotes October 2020

‘Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet’. Acts 7:48

Today, and tomorrow we’re looking at a few talks given at General Conference earlier this month, and pulled some of the most notable things that were said. It seems there were two main topics this time around. Most of the talks focused on race issues, or keeping a current temple recommend, or both.

As an FYI, the numbering system we’ve used here doesn’t reflect the order of talks given at the conference.

1‘Badge of Obedience to a Prophet of God’.

General Conference, ‘Recommended to the Lord’, October 2020 “Latter-day Saint temples…stand as testaments of faith in eternal life. … He sets the standards by which we enter as His guests.

The phrase “recommended to the Lord” puts additional perspective on being interviewed regularly by Church leaders. … A temple recommend is not a checklist or ticket for special seating. … To be “recommended of the Lord” means striving to become like Him. …

During President Howard W. Hunter’s first address as 14th President of the Church, he said, “It would please the Lord if every adult member would be worthy of — and carry — a current temple recommend.” After hearing President Hunter that day, President Russell M. Nelson said his temple recommend “became my badge of obedience to a prophet of God.”

Though temples throughout the world are closed or in limited use…being worthy to attend the temple has not been suspended. Whether you have access to a temple or not, you need a current temple recommend to stay firmly on the covenant path.” — Ronald A. Rasband

Mr. Rasband’s talk was very revealing. It showed the Church’s priorities lie first, and foremost, in their pocketbook.

Temple recommends require 10% of a member’s income. It also showed that obedience goes to their prophet, and not Jesus. You show obedience by having regular check-in appointments with the bishop to ensure you’re behaving, aka, ‘staying on the covenant path’. The badge of obedience is much like a gold star placed on a child’s forehead when he obeyed in kindergarten.

Lastly, where in the Bible does it say a follower of Jesus is merely a guest in the temple of God?

2.A New Normal

General Conference, “A New Normal’, October 2020 “If you really want to embrace a new normal, I invite you to turn your heart, mind and soul increasingly to our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Let that be your new normal.” — Russell Nelson

A great new normal would be turning to the real Jesus of the Bible, and repent for leading so many astray Mr. Nelson.

3.Repeated Prophetic Counsel

LDS Living General Conference October 2020 Quote “The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce.” — David A. Bednar

We found Mr. Bednar’s comment quite strange. It sounds like he’s saying that if they repeat the same thing numerous times, their message drowns out all surrounding sounds. It’s reminiscent of Mark Twain’s comment about the BoM being ‘chloroform in print’.

So far, we’ve only looked at 3 talks, and haven’t seen any uplifting truths about Jesus. Tomorrow we’ll see a few more, but remember beloved to pray for those who listened to the lies. Pray for Jesus to remind them that truth is found in His word alone, and not the words of self-proclaimed teachers of Christ.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
