Jesus; the Root of Jesse

December 14 — Jesus; the Root of Jesse. Isaiah 53:2 “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”

Luke 2:7 “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Our biblical references today show 2 things.

1.The fulfillment of God’s promise to supply a Redeemer.

2.The outright lies of Joseph Smith’s grandiose belief he was the long-awaited promise of salvation.

The verse in Isaiah 53:2 is considered an ‘extension’ of further thought from Isaiah 11:1, 10.

Isaiah 11:1 “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots”.

Isaiah 11:10 “And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.”

We can clearly see how the rod spoken of is referring to Jesse who was a farmer, but later whose son would become King David. The root out of dry ground is a reference to Jesus, who by His time, Israel had lost all of its grandeur as a reputable nation.

At the time Jesus was born, many, if not all, women would have a midwife assisting her. The Bible says nothing of such an event by stating she brought forth her newborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes. (Although Apocryphal writings state otherwise, the Bible does not.) See Keil & Delitzsch Commentary on the Old Testament, p. 504 for more info.

Now with our understanding of how the Lord kept His promise, check out what Joseph Smith thought about the passage in Isaiah chapter eleven. Somehow the focus went from Jesus, to Joseph.

1–6, The Stem of Jesse, the rod coming therefrom, and the root of Jesse are identified; 7–10, The scattered remnants of Zion have a right to the priesthood and are called to return to the Lord.”

D&C 113:5-6 “What is the root of Jesse spoken of in the 10th verse of the 11th chapter? 6 Behold, thus saith the Lord, it is a descendant of Jesse, as well as of Joseph, unto whom rightly belongs the priesthood, and the keys of the kingdom, for an ensign, and for the gathering of my people in the last days.”
