2 Timothy 3:7-8 “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.”
Philippians 3:14 “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Our LDS reference today is an excerpt from a talk Mr. Brown gave to the student body at the Church College of Hawaii (now BYU Hawaii) on May 13, 1969. You can also read excerpts of it in the book ‘An Abundant Life, A Final Testimony’, written by his grandson.
I couldn’t help but think of what Paul said about learning, and never knowing the truth, and his reminder to the Philippian believers to keep running the race with a goal in mind.
The reason we’re looking at this is because of its frequent use in many talks and references. Mr. Brown was a popular speaker who drew crowds wherever he spoke. He was an LDS apostle, attorney, and a professor of religion at BYU. See Wikipedia for more info.
One can’t help but wonder why this man would state that following his god would be a challenge when he also told students to be obedient.
Furthermore, if an apostle said there is no final goal, what does that mean for the average member like my mother? How should they interpret this, and what purpose did it serve?
Mr. Brown’s philosophies are still being carried on today. Their goals are elusive, and their leadership is like the blind leading the blind.
Pray for members to see through the façade of their leaders, and the lies they perpetrate.
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
