LDS: Holy Spirit Requires Righteousness

February 7 — LDS: Holy Spirit Requires Righteousness. John 14:17 says “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you”.

_____

From this scripture and the following six verses we can see and know the Holy Spirit is our “resident teacher”.

He isn’t something that only appears when we’re on our best behavior, but He makes His abode with us. The transliteration of abode means to tarry. John 14:23

“The gift of the Holy Ghost is the right to have the constant companionship of the Spirit; the actual enjoyment of the gift, the actual receipt of the companionship of the Spirit, is based on personal righteousness; it does not come unless and until the person is worthy to receive it. The Spirit will not dwell in an unclean tabernacle. (1 Cor. 3:16-17; 6:19.)” — Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 224.

Share with a Mormon that God’s Holy Spirit doesn’t require us to be worthy of His presence. The Holy Spirit prompts believers to be a good person hence the phrase ‘we become a new creature in Christ’ – 2 Corinthians 5:17.

We could work at being worthy for a month of Sundays and it’d all be for naught because there is none righteous no not one — Romans 3:10.

With Love in Christ –

Michelle
