The Efficacy of Jesus’ Blood
I came across this sermon given by Amasa Lyman on Christmas day in 1859. After 19 years of in-depth studying of Mormonism there’s little shock value left in me. Today is the exception to the rule.
Journal of Discourses 7:297-299; “When we cling to what Jesus Christ has done for us, do you not see that our part will never be done? We may pray and sing, and pay Tithing, and go to church, and attend to all the outward forms of religion, and attend to all those things that thousands believed in doing, and then we shall find that our salvation will not be wrought out.”
Paying tithing, going to church, baptism, taking communion, being the Sunday school teacher, or pastor or bishop isn’t what saves us.
Clinging to Jesus and what He’s done for me is the only thing I have in this life. My comfy lifestyle means nothing to me.
The only value I have in life is what Jesus has done for me. I have nothing; I am nothing without His sacrifice for me. I am but a vapor in the wind…
James 4:14; “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
“We may talk of men being redeemed by the efficacy of his blood; but the truth is that that blood has no efficacy to wash away our sins. That must depend upon our own action.”
Where did this philosophy come from other than those who’ve rejected Christ Jesus whom He sent?
“Has Jesus done anything that will bring salvation to you and me? The chief of what he has done is that he has revealed the plan of the Gospel-the scheme of human redemption, and manifested himself among his brethren; and we may say he has done a great deal more, for he has shed his blood for it. So have others shed their blood.”
The chief of what He has done is share the gospel? You have got to be kidding me. Now that I’m off the floor from the shock of what this man has proclaimed, let me just say one thing. Get behind me Satan.
“But whose blood has cleansed you and me? It is said that the blood of Jesus cleanses from all sins. Then why is it that we remain sinners? It is simply because the blood of Jesus has not cleansed us from sin-because it has not reached us. What is the reason? It is because we have not been found in that perfect path of obedience that ensures us a freedom from sin.” – Amasa Lyman, Salt Lake City, December 25, 1859
Unbelievable.
When I first began reading the story of Amasa Lyman supplied by various LDS writings, I originally got the impression he was an amiable enough guy. Then I started seeing things that contradicted my initial impressions of him. The multiple wives, questionable behavior with Brigham Young and the every day following of Mormonism put a wrench in his squeaky clean image. Still I thought maybe he’d been duped like the rest of them and the poor fellow just didn’t know any better. He had seven wives and is the great-great grandfather of James Faust. Eventually he was excommunicated for teaching Jesus didn’t die for the sins of man but not until ten + years after this sermon was delivered. On top of that while he delivered this sermon in SLC he was then sent on missions overseas.
Whatever little doubt was left for this guy is now blown out of the water. May God have mercy on his soul.
NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain
Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain
This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain
Now by this I’ll overcome—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
Now by this I’ll reach my home—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain
Glory! Glory! This I sing—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
WOW! You are absolutely right- a shocker! Sounds like Satan’s lies to me, too.
Amen.
White as snow
White as snow
Though my sins were as scarlet
Lord I know,
Lord I know
That I’m clean and forgiven
Through the Power of Your Blood
Through the Wonder of Your Love
Through Faith in You
I know that I can be
White as snow,
White as snow
White as snow
