Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Eating Raw Meat
Leviticus 7:26-27; “Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings. 27 Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.”
The two verses above are pretty clear wouldn’t you say?
So I would ask the Mormons what they’d have to say about the following two verses found in the Book of Mormon. They come from a story of the Nephites in their trek to America.
1 Nephi 17:2; “And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us, that while we did live upon raw meat in the wilderness…”
1 Nephi 17:12; “For the Lord had not hitherto suffered that we should make much fire, as we journeyed in the wilderness; for he said: I will make thy food become sweet, that ye cook it not.”
Isn’t it interesting how God would tell this set of Israelites to eat raw meat when He so clearly told the other Israelites not to participate in such behavior?
I hope it’s understood there is blood in raw meat and the problem with this is that God specifically forbade the Israelites not to eat or drink the blood of an animal. The reason why is because there is life in the blood and it’s to be treated with the utmost respect. You’ll note how important the message is in the New Testament of how Christ’s blood which contained life was shed for us willingly so that we might have life.
Now if that wasn’t interesting enough, here’s another twist to the story…some 170 years later the Nephites are fighting with the Lamanites and they’re commenting on how horrible the Lamanites are. One of the Lamanites’ detestable character traits is that of eating raw meat. My, how the passing of years can change the outlook of things…
Enos 1:20; “…And many of them did eat nothing save it was raw meat; and they were continually seeking to destroy us.”
I don’t know why this should bother you. The Bible (which The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints also uses) has many examples of contradictory commandments and teachings right within its own pages. God gives us what we need at the time we need it.
The correct way to study the Bible is to let the Bible interpret itself from other passages. Then there is the Old Testament, or Old Covenant, which is the Law. The New Testament, or New Covenant, is the Gospel.
It is not contradictory. Putting aside the BOM and other Mormon materials and helps, and just using the Bible alone, start your study. You’ll find it is completely different from what is taught in Mormonism.
