Thought of the Day “and So Forth”
Alma 22:14; “…but the sufferings and death of Christ atone for their sins, through faith and repentance, and so forth…”
You have got to be kidding me. Seriously?
What if God gave you a set of instructions and while quickly flipping through a laundry list of things you need to figure out in order to get saved you come upon the directive “and so forth”?
What would you do?
How would you make sense of what this god must have meant and what would you do if you found out you’re wrong?
Are there do-overs?
You better start praying for that because if you’re not in the business of reading minds then you’re going to be in big trouble.
Alma 22:14; “And since man had fallen he could not merit anything of himself; but the sufferings and death of Christ atone for their sins, through faith and repentance, and so forth; and that he breaketh the bands of death, that the grave shall have no victory, and that the sting of death should be swallowed up in the hopes of glory; and Aaron did expound all these things unto the king.”
*cringe* What is that?!!?? Run-of-the-mill list of stuff is demeaning the sacrifice of Jesus. Of course, the Mormons don’t hold this in the Highest Honor for thier god or his son, so we sort of expect this. Then again, NOT!
Surprises abound in the BOM!
That they do my friend, that they do.
Sadly it’s a life full of not so good surprises.

When I read that it kind of reminded me of my “Description of Work” at the company I work for…
After a list of about 20 different things I am supposed to do, the final description says; “Other duties as assigned”. It’s a “catch all” for anything not listed… ya know, yada, yada, yada…
We always joke when the boss asks us to do something that isn’t included in our description of work, we will say something like, “Is that under the ‘other duties as assigned’ portion of our work description” Haha.
I know it isn’t any laughing matter when it comes to salvation, but it is a little comical to think that there would even be a list of requirements beyond the 2 listed in the verse from Alma – “Faith” and “Repentance”
You’re right! I honestly don’t know how to react to that verse. Should I be aghast? I want to laugh but it’s not from ridicule; rather it’s a reaction of fear and frustration! I just can’t imagine living like that anymore.
Mind you, I truly believe this isn’t a free ride living in the world of God’s grace. We as Christians have a duty as His children to behave accordingly. With that being said I do believe that God wouldn’t leave a stone unturned, nor would He leave something so important up to our imagination of how we think things could/should be done.
I know my kids pretty well. After raising them to adulthood I am well aware of what they will and won’t do. They’re great kids – both following the Lord, etc but they’re human. They’re going to look for things to be convenient for them and I think God knows us better than we do our own kids.
