Adam, the Father of Our Spirits?
Journal of Wilford Woodruff, December 11, 1869, Brigham Young Addresses, 1865-1869, Vol. 5, page 361; “… the period will come when the people will be willing to adopt Joseph Smith as their Prophet, Seer and Revelator and God! But not the father of their spirits, for that was our father Adam.” – Elden J. Watson, Feb. 1982
Psalm 50:16-17; “But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? 17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.”
How many leaders in the LDS Church taught the Adam-God theory is really unknown, but what is known is that it was taught. As we’ve pointed out before the Church now denounces this teaching.
Our point in posting this today is to show how this teaching is much like the dangers the Lord warned us about in a little leaven spoils the whole loaf. It permeates everything – once sin grabs hold there’s no telling which direction it’ll take or into whose heart it cements itself into.
This example comes from the diary of Wilford Woodruff who became the fourth prophet of the Church. Here’s proof that at least one other person believed Mr. Young’s false teachings.
It goes without saying the rest of Brigham’s statements was heretical as well. The time will never come when people will announce Joseph Smith is God! And how could Joseph be God with Adam being the father of our spirits? This guy’s head was a scary place…
