1 Nephi 4:26; “And he, supposing that I spake of the brethren of the church, and that I was truly that Laban whom I had slain, wherefore he did follow me.”
Exodus 20:3; “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”.
We have a number of things to look at in this text so let’s take them one by one and see if what it says lines up with the commandments of God!
1. Exodus 20:13 says; “Thou shalt not kill”.
Why did Nephi murder a defenseless drunken man who was passed out?
2. Jews didn’t go to church in 600 BC – the text says Nephi went to the temple to kill Laban and steal the plates that contained his family’s history.
3. Exodus 20:15 says; “Thou shalt not steal”.
If God really wanted this unknown tribe to take some historical teachings with them to the new land why must they murder, steal and lie to get them?
4. Exodus 20:16 says; “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor”.
Why did Nephi lie to Laban’s servant Zoram by being deceptive about what he was doing?
5. Israelites were commanded not to touch any dead person. Furthermore, if/when he did he had to purify himself afterwards, otherwise he was seen as defiling the temple and God would cut him off from all of Israel – Numbers 19:13.
In this one verse we’ve seen how this mysterious group of an unknown tribe has broken five commandments. If they hadn’t been chasing after another god to get out of Israel they wouldn’t have encountered so many problems!
