Helaman 13:31; “And behold, the time cometh that he curseth your riches, that they become slippery, that ye cannot hold them; and in the days of your poverty ye cannot retain them.”
Leviticus 20:27; “A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.”
It’s odd the Nephites would run into the same problem ol’ Joe kept running into when he searched for treasure. Hmmm…
And this isn’t the only place magic rears its ugly head in the BoM – we see it again in Mormon 1:18; “And these Gadianton robbers, who were among the Lamanites, did infest the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof began to hide up their treasures in the earth; and they became slippery, because the Lord had cursed the land, that they could not hold them, nor retain them again.”
God doesn’t curse the land by having things slip back into the ground when you dig them up! Joseph testified of this happening because the “enchantment” of the treasure was too much to physically hold or look at. You can read about his enchantment experiences in H. Michael Marquardt’s work “Early Life of Joseph Smith in New York” here.
