Mosiah 4:29-30; “29 And finally, I cannot tell you all the things whereby ye may commit sin; for there are divers ways and means, even so many that I cannot number them.
30 But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.”
Matthew 10:30; “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”
I’m deeply concerned about this passage in the BoM and here’s why –
1. The BoM claims to be the words of God to man. If this is so then why wouldn’t God know how many sins there are?
2. How can the people know what all the commandments are if they don’t know how many sins there are?
3. Jesus was very specific in Matthew by telling us every single hair on our heads is numbered. How can God count our hairs and not the number of ways we could sin?
In the Garden of Eden God directed Adam to obey Him by not partaking of the tree of knowledge of good and evil – Genesis 2:16-17. When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt God established the Law with them at Mt. Sinai – Genesis 20:1-17.
We know there are 613 laws in the Torah and of those 365 are “thou shalt not” types of commandments. All these are basically “rooted” if you will, in the summation we find in Exodus 20:1-17 in the Ten Commandments.
However we see in Matthew chapters 5-7 where Jesus took these to a whole new level and we see part of these reiterated with Paul’s exhortation in Galatians 5:19-21.
How many sins are listed in the Bible? Well if you count all the laws there are 613, but if you’re counting the “thou shalt not” commandments then it’s 365. The biggest thing to remember is Galatians 3:10;
“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.”
Why wouldn’t an “inspired” man in the BoM not know this if he’s receiving a direct word from God?
Every time a Mormon buys into the story that Adam and Eve had to sin they’re disobeying what Mosiah said, so now what?
