Today’s dilemma is courtesy of Melissa! Here’s what she sent to me the other day –
I just read the first paragraph and had to comment.
From the October 2014 Ensign we read:
“When prayer works as it should, we express the feelings of our hearts in simple words. Heavenly Father typically answers by putting thoughts in our minds accompanied by feelings. He always hears the sincere prayer we offer when we pray with a commitment to obey Him, whatever His answer and whenever it comes. The Lord makes this promise to all who read and pray about the Book of Mormon.” – Henry B. Eyring
This only applies when someone prays about the BOM and decides to join the Church. However, when another person prays and is told to avoid it, and the church like the plague, they’re told the message (and feelings) they received are not from God but from Satan.
I guess the operative word Mormons would use here is “sincere”, if you received an answer that didn’t affirm the so called truth of the BOM you just weren’t praying sincerely enough.
God has given us something we can use to measure whether a feeling, prompting or a message we hear is from Him.
1 Timothy 3:14-16 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
