God’s Hand in Our Nation’s History, p. 3; “Later Nephi saw this in vision: “And I
looked and beheld a man among the Gentiles, who was separated from the seed of my brethren by the many waters; and I beheld the Spirit of God, and it came down and wrought upon the man; and he went forth upon the many waters” (1 Nephi 13:12).
Though unnamed, the man this passage refers to is Columbus…
Nephi then continues his record: And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles [the American colonies] and they did prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance. . . . And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles who had gone forth out of captivity [from Europe] did humble themselves before the Lord; and the power of the Lord was with them. [1 Nephi 13:15, 16]
This refers, of course, to the American colonists. Nephi then foresaw the great War of Independence.
He said: And I beheld that their mother Gentiles [the British] were gathered together upon the waters, and upon the land also, to battle against them. And I beheld that the power of God was with them, and also that the wrath of God was upon all those who were gathered together against them to battle. And I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles that had gone out of captivity were delivered by the power of God out of the hands of all other nations. [1 Nephi 13:17–19].
All this was foreseen over twenty-three hundred years before it took place…” – Ezra Taft Benson, BYU Speeches, March 28, 1977
Hebrews 13:9; “Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.”
Hindsight’s 20/20 as they say, and what a wonder it is with Nephi’s prediction! Mr. Benson, 13th prophet of the Church, chose to perpetuate the lie that Nephi prophesied about the Brits. This speech has been quoted, reprinted and used by numerous LDS officials over the years as fodder for ‘proof’ the false prophecies are indeed fact.
Question:
If Nephi could foresee the Brits and Colonists fighting it out 2,300 years beforehand, why couldn’t he foresee that every single Nephite would die in war?
