General Conference Closing Remarks, April 2007; “Husbands,
love and treasure your wives. They are your most precious possessions.” – Gordon B. Hinckley
Ephesians 5:25; “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
Sometimes you have to wonder what’s goin’ on upstairs for some folks…
Mr. Hinckley was 96 years old when he gave the closing remarks for the Church’s General Conference in 2007. He’d been around long enough to know he should’ve cracked open that Bible of his, and use it in context.
The Bible DOES NOT say women are possessions of their husbands. Saying things like this insinuates they’re on a guy’s list of stuff he owns. I can see some guy pulling out a rumpled piece of paper from his pocket as he writes down a note for himself…
Okay, I own a car..check. A house…check. A boat…ooh yeah…check. Dog,..can’t forget Fido…check. Of course, the television…check. Oh yeah, the wife…check…
A visual of Fred and Barney dressed for a meeting at the Moose Lodge keeps going through my head…
Mr. Hinckley’s comment also reflects just how much he knows God’s word and appreciates what the Lord has done through His creation. We are all created in the image of God, meaning we’re image bearers of who He is.
Even though God is the Creator of all things, including you and me, His word never intimates He ‘owns’ us. This false prophet’s words are a clear indication of what he thinks of women, not to mention God. Given his background and this statement, women are nothing more than a common piece of chattel that can be tossed if necessary.
