January 22 – Everlasting burnings. What is it? Who goes to everlasting burnings and why? Isaiah 33:12, 14. “And the people shall be as the burnings of lime…the sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”

As a Christian I can find refuge by knowing where I’ll be after this earthly life. There’s no confusion in my mind about the meaning of everlasting burnings for me any longer. The teachings of Joseph Smith always have a way of confusing the Mormon people. The Bible says one thing, and they’re taught to read them regardless of the contradictory teachings Smith throws their way.
God was bringing judgment against Jerusalem, and they (the Israelites) of all people, saw they were being judged by God for their sinful lifestyles. The Assyrian army was setting the city ablaze and few, if any, escaped the wrath that came barreling into their beloved refuge. The stench from the burning limestone served as an horrific reminder to the Israelites of what was soon to take place for them, and it should’ve served as notice how awful their sinful lives stunk to the Lord.
Smith’s ‘promise’ is a horrifying exposition of Satan’s evil ways.

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith p. 346; “Here, then, is eternal life-to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves…from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings…”
