General Conference, ‘Making Righteous Choices at the Crossroads of Life,’ October 1988; “But if we are obedient and faithful to the laws, ordinances, and covenants which we accept with our free agency, of our own free will and choice, we can attain eternal life.” – Robert Dean Hales
Colossians 2:14 “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”
Ephesians 2:15-16 “Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
We are no longer under the law, nor are we in debt for our sins. The grace of Jesus Christ cancels out that debt with His shed blood, making us free from the bondage of the burden of trying to make ourselves righteous through works.
We don’t have to try to obtain eternal life through good works and meaningless rituals. Eternal life is a (free) gift to all who repent, and put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ!
In Christ,
