Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 340-41 “I have asked of the Lord concerning His coming; and while asking the Lord, He gave a sign and said, “In the days of Noah I set a bow in the heavens as a sign and token that in any year that the bow should be seen the Lord would not come; but there should be seed time and harvest during that year; but whenever you see the bow withdrawn, it shall be a token that there shall be famine, pestilence, and great distress among the nations, and that the coming of the Messiah is not far distant.”” — April 2, 1843
Also see D&C 130:14-17.
Genesis 9:13-15 “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.”
The reason Smith’s prophecy is false is because he lied about what God said! The passage in Genesis 9 clearly states the reason for rainbows, and true to form, Smith lied about it.
Sadly, Mormons have run with this one, and passed it on down from one generation to the next.
Lovingly share the beautiful story of God’s first covenant with man!
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
If you look more closely, God said that he wouldn’t destroyed the earth again by flood (such as in the days of Noah wherein all the land was covered with water, drowning everybody and everything except those on the ark). Now, this article is claiming that Joseph Smith lied because he had revelation that when the bow is removed, famine, pestilance and great distress… the coming of the Messiah is not far distant. What does that have to do with being destroyed again by complete earth-covering flooding? This article is trying to distort peoples’ minds. The author Michelle is not being truthful.
It can be both. A sign that He won’t flood the earth again. And a sign of the second coming at its removal. I am sorry Michelle, it seems you will have to do better if you are going to discredit a prophet of God. Please repent and come back. God loves you. He wants you to follow His prophet as He has always asked His saints to do. And before you say it. Giving us signs of a false prophet means that He was going to continue to send true ones. If you worship the Bible but miss the prophets who are continuing to write it that’s not going to be well with you.

JST, Genesis 9:21–25
Joseph Smith Translation
21 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant, which I made unto thy father Enoch; that, when men should keep all my commandments, Zion should again come on the earth, the city of Enoch which I have caught up unto myself.
22 And this is mine everlasting covenant, that when thy posterity shall embrace the truth, and look upward, then shall Zion look downward, and all the heavens shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy;
23 And the general assembly of the church of the firstborn shall come down out of heaven, and possess the earth, and shall have place until the end come. And this is mine everlasting covenant, which I made with thy father Enoch.
24 And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will establish my covenant unto thee, which I have made between me and thee, for every living creature of all flesh that shall be upon the earth.
25 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant which I have established between me and thee; for all flesh that shall be upon the earth.
