The Old Sarge served in the US Army for over 25 years. The Army was and still is, a family to me. I meant so many wonderful people in the military. Many of them sacrificed themselves, so that others might live and be free.
I believe that military people have special place in God’s heart. King David, was a warrior king and God called him’ “A man after my own heart’ (Acts 13:22)
How about the Centurion that Jesus met in Matthew 8:56-10). This Roman soldier (Centurion) was a member of an occupying army. He was not considered a friend of the Jewish people. Yet, this young Roman soldier approached Jesus with a request. He asked Jesus to heal his servant. Who was this servant. Odds are, the servant was a local person (Jew) given a job (contract) by the Roman Legion forces occupying Capernaum. When Jesus offered to go to the soldiers home to heal his servant, the centurion said to Jesus, that he, a Roman conqueror and a member of an occupying army, was not worthy that Jesus should come under his roof. Instead, this Roman soldier said, “Lord, just say the “WORD” (God’s Word) and my servant will be healed. Wow!! What was Jesus’s response to this statement? Jesus “marveled” at the faith of this “enemy soldier” and said to those around him” I have not seen such great faith in all of Israel.”
It was a simple soldier, a man of hardship and sacrifice that Jesus recognized.
I have been to war and witnessed man’s inhumanity to man. I sincerely believe that when soldiers call on God for comfort and peace in battle, God hears them and rewards them with his presence.
As always your insight is great! Thanks for the great reminder of what our Lord said.
And thanks for your service as well! 🙂
