General Conference, ‘The Work of the Temple and Family History—One and the Same Work,’ April 2023 “As we follow the guidance of the prophets and learn how to do our family history and perform the temple ordinances for our ancestors, we will experience great joy to the point that we will not want to stop doing it. …
“The temple lies at the center of strengthening our faith and spiritual fortitude because the Savior and His doctrine are the very heart of the temple.
Everything taught in the temple, through instruction and through the Spirit, increases our understanding of Jesus Christ.”” — Benjamín De Hoyos, Of the Seventy
Acts 17:22-25 “Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.”
Paul’s exhortation to the Athenians c. 49 AD reminded me of what’s going on in LDS temples today. Members don’t know the god they’re worshiping, nor are they encouraged to do so.
Instead of learning more about Jesus in their temples they’re busy performing rituals for themselves and dead people which doesn’t always mean ancestors. Case in point is when my mother’s uncle did rituals for my younger brother in 1988 and my niece in 2011.
The other disturbing part of Mr. De Hoyos’ talk is why they’d believe that following a sinful man like their prophet would be beneficial. Oh the tangled web they weave…
Please pray for people like my mother who told me she found this guy’s talk comforting. Sigh…
With Love in Christ —
