Whenever I hear the words above, I think of the Christian hymn Unto the King. It’s hard to even keep seated just thinking about it!
How sad it is for the Mormons who’ve been told three different stories regarding the true identity of our King.
Many Mormons aren’t aware Smith crowned himself as king so be sure to ask for their opinion about the three widely different doctrines they’ve been told to embrace.
Who, in their opinion, is King?

D&C 38:21-22 “But, verily I say unto you that in time ye shall have no king nor ruler, for I will be your king and watch over you. 22 Wherefore, hear my voice and follow me, and you shall be a free people, and ye shall have no laws but my laws when I come, for I am your lawgiver, and what can stay my hand?”
Times & Seasons 5:618, August 15, 1844 “…to build up the kingdom upon the foundation that the prophet Joseph has laid, who still holds the keys of this last dispensation, and will hold them to all eternity, as a king and priest unto the most high God, ministering in heaven, on earth, or among the spirits of the departed dead, as seemeth good to him who sent him.”
Improvement Era 1909, Vol Xiii, No. 1, p. 19 “Every man reigns a king over the kingdom of—self. He wears the crown of individuality that no hands but his own can ever remove. He should not only reign, but—rule. His individuality is his true self, his best self, his highest self, his self victorious…Man reigns over this miniature kingdom of self—alone. He is as much an autocrat as is God in ruling the universe. No one can make him good or evil but he, himself.”
