Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 42 “Now what is this other Comforter? It is no more nor less than the Lord Jesus Christ himself; and this is the sum and substance of the whole matter; that when any man obtains this last Comforter, he will have the personage of Jesus Christ to attend him, or appear unto him from time to time, and even he will manifest the Father unto him, and they will take up their abode with him, and the visions of the heavens will be opened unto him, and the Lord will teach him face to face, and he may have a perfect knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God; and this is the state and place the ancient Saints arrived at when they had such glorious visions—Isaiah, Ezekiel, John upon the Isle of Patmos, Paul in the three heavens, and all the Saints who held communion with the general assembly and Church of the First Born. (HC 3:380-81.).” — Joseph Smith
John 14:23 “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”
We have a few questions about Joe Smith’s insight…
Where in the Bible does it say anything about two comforters?
Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus is a 2nd comforter?
Where in the Bible does it say Jesus will appear to people?
The Bible makes it clear that the mystery of the Kingdom of God is none other than Jesus Christ. There’s no secret to discover in this! The apostle Paul declared this in his letter to Timothy –
1 Timothy 3:16 “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
The next time Jesus makes an earthly appearance is at His 2nd Coming –
Matthew 24:30 “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
This verse in Matthew tells us there’s no way that Jesus made a special visit to Smith and friends. For more info see GotQuestions.org.
