October 1 — On LDS Daily, an article was written as a prep guide to help church members get ready for General Conference. Preparing for General Conference sounds a lot like preparing to watch the Super Bowl. They have to prepare their snacks, make sure they have the correct channel and broadcast times. They have to think about the meals they’re going to have and what they’re going to wear. Will they dress up like they’re going to church?
The article also talks about getting your mind and home ready to receive revelation. You can do this by having Mormon artwork, pictures of the temple, displaying a statue of the Mormon Jesus, or playing peaceful music. Having these “symbols” around you is supposed to make the whole experience of General Conference more holy and sacred.
Also, have a journal for General Conference and decorate it, this “signals to your mind and heart that something special is happening”. You’ll need to make room for any revelation the Holy Ghost may have for you. This may involve repenting of certain habits or anything that would make you unworthy.
And don’t forget to involve the kids as well by having a General Conference bingo game, child-friendly worksheets, and quiet toys. Don’t forget the quiet toys; this is very important. Any noise while the church leaders are delivering their talks can disrupt the reverence in the room, and the Holy Ghost may flee until it is returned.
I talk about this in a somewhat snarky way, I know. As a Christian, I can’t imagine anything more mind-numbing than sitting through hours of talks by Mormon leaders. Looking back now, I don’t know how I did it as a Mormon with two little energetic boys.
As Christians, we prepare ourselves each Sunday to hear from God’s word and to learn more about Jesus. Even when we go to men’s or women’s conferences, it’s all about Jesus and how we can grow to love him more and serve him better.
In this article on how to prepare for General Conference, I didn’t see one mention of Him. For a church that claims to love Jesus and be “his church,” why wouldn’t you be preparing to learn more about him?

We agree! I think they do these things to take their attention away from the Lord. Filling their heads with the busyness of lists to do things doesn’t allow them to fill their minds and hearts with Jesus!
