Joseph Smith had quite the reputation for all kinds of questionable activities.

Most know him for his many wives, but there’s also the entrepreneurial side of Joe that usually ended in disaster. We’ve created a page as a repository for many of his get-rich-quick schemes, and other ill-fated deeds.

The reason for creating another page came from the many random requests on Smith’s illegal activities. Although we do have a section on Smith, we realized there’s nothing dedicated to just this one topic. Thus, here we are! By the end of the day, you’ll find our new page over on the right sidebar in the Joseph Smith section. You’ll find it now at the end of the article.

We pray members of the Church will check out the reliable references we’ve provided so they can see how Smith wasn’t a true prophet.

Our hearts grieve for those who’ve been tricked by this man, and pray they’ll turn their devotion to Christ Jesus and Him crucified!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle

OnThisDayinMormonHistory.comApr 23, 1843 – “Robert Wiley “finds” six metal, bell-shaped plates covered with hieroglyphs while digging in a mound near Kinderhook, Illinois. The plates are found with a skeleton eleven feet below the top of the mound. There are “two mormon elders” among the dozen people witnessing the excavation. The plates are brought to Joseph Smith who says “they contain the history of the person with whom they were found and he was a descendant of Ham through the loins of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and that he received his kingdom from the ruler of heaven and earth.” In 1855 and 1879 associates of Wiley claim that the plates were a hoax gotten up by Wiley and friends to fool Smith. There is debate about the validity of the “hoax” stories until 1981 when the plates are subjected to testing which conclusively verifies their 19th-century origin and details given by the hoaxers in their manufacture.” (more…)

Mormon Decisions 10History of the Church 5:372, 377; “Comment of the Prophet on the Kinderhook Plates. I insert fac-similes of the six brass plates found near Kinderhook, in Pike county, Illinois, on April 23, by Mr. Robert Wiley and others, while excavating a large mound. They found a skeleton about six feet from the surface of the earth, which must have stood nine feet high. The plates were found on the breast of the skeleton and were covered on both sides with ancient characters.
