People often ask us at LAM if anyone knew what Smith and his friends were up to in the early days of Mormonism.
The answer to that is a resounding, YES!
Books and pamphlets were written exposing the Church’s nefarious deeds. Conferences were held, meetings scheduled, and an all out propaganda machine was in full swing denouncing what Smith and company were doing. For many, it wasn’t just the fact he was spreading a false gospel, oh no. Many were up in arms because of the wanton sexual licentious they engaged in, reminiscent of the days in Sodom and Gomorrah. People were horrified learning about the spiritual wifery, and swapping wives amongst themselves for a higher status.
Many dubbed their activities as nothing less than prostitution on the Western Frontier.
Today we’re highlighting two of the more well known ‘anti-Mormons’ of the time; John Bowes, and John Hyde, Jr. We’ve pulled a quote from each of their books to give readers an idea of what others thought of Mormonism.
