Nephites Created Mayan Calendar
Signs of the Times, p.155; “The Nephites on this continent also had a clear understanding of the universe. Without question the great Mexican, or Mayan, calendar stone, is the development of the teachings of inspired leaders among the Nephites.” – Joseph Fielding Smith
Leviticus 18:21; “And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.”
Why would any God fearing man or woman claim any ties at all to anything the Mayans do? I wasn’t sure which category to place this in…false prophecies or dilemmas…but finally decided it could fit both so here we are!
Mayans were polytheists who worshipped countless nature gods in their stone temples, practiced witchcraft, and performed human sacrifices to their malevolent fertility gods. Now, why would anyone claiming to be Christian want anything to do with these people?
They also practiced divination centering on their calendar years which consisted of 18 months. http://www.religionfacts.com/mayan_religion/index.htm
When a Mormon official in any capacity says things like this from their pulpit, the Mormon people listen and believe everything they’re told – my mother is a classic example of this, as are the many missionaries that come to my door and claim the same thing. This is yet another dilemma for the Church.
Truth stands the same always and here we have the Mormon hierarchy spouting lies told almost a hundred years ago.
If you want to claim that your holy scripture came forth from people performing human sacrifices that’s fine, but please, don’t call it Christianity. Or as my grandpa used to always say; “God’s going to get you for that”.
This is just another example of false understanding and misrepresentation.
Let us look at what is actually being said.
“The Nephites on this continent also had a clear understanding of the universe.”
This is true, and there is no dilemma in it, so we will move on.
“Without question the great Mexican, or Mayan, calendar stone, is the development of the teachings of inspired leaders among the Nephites.”
This is the claimed dilemma, based on the assertian that Josph Fielding Smith is saying that the Mayans were the Nephites. This is not the case however. What he is saying is that the Mayans used the inspired teachings of Nephite leaders to develop this calander, which is perfectly fine. Just because a group of people use the knowledge of another does not pose any dilemma.
Now, considering that the Mayan civilization is said to have begun about 240 AD it is obvious that they were not Nephites, as the Nephites were all destroyed by 241 AD. However, the knowledge of the Nephites would have servived much longer than this, and by utilizing this knowledge the Mayans built their calander stone.
Again, where is the dilemma.
Shem don’t you find it tiring when you have to always make excuses? Why not allow God to do all the work for you Shem? He’s the consummate provider and will never contradict Himself.
BTW – since there is NO evidence of the Nephites surviving at all, let alone to 421 AD – it’d be quite the stretch to believe their influence carried on to the Mayan period and through the Aztec period – additionally, experts on the Mayans say that their ideologies came from the Aztecs.
From what I have read the Aztecs got their stuff from the Mayans. But it really doesn’t matter, as both of them would have been heavily influenced by the Nephites.
Now, I really don’t care about evidence as this is a matter of Faith. After all, where is the evidence for anything that happened before the flood, or for the flood, or for most of the book of Genesis. Yet you accept it (at least I assume you do).
As to excuses, I have never made a single excuse. I have simply explained the truth of the matter. To make en excuse would indicate that I think something wrong was done or said, and I do not believe such to be the case.
As to God doing the work, why don’t you. After all you have been coming up with so many excuses as to why you don’t believe the LDS church. Why do you find it necessary to keep doing this. It must be tiring and you could just let God do all the work.
