What are the “robes of righteousness” to a member of the LDS Church?
Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 535; “In a Messianic passage Isaiah declared: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness” (Isa. 61:10). In the current dispensation, the principle has been reaffirmed in prophetic idiom: “Zion must increase in beauty,…and put on her beautiful garments” (D&C 82:14). Latter-day Saints believe that all such clothing is symbolic of the submission, sanctification, and spotless purity of those who desire to serve God and Christ and ultimately regain their eternal presence (D&C 61:34; 135:5).”
Revelation 1:5; “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.”
Revelation 19:8; “And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.”
Isaiah 61:10; “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.”
The garment of salvation can only be worn by those who are saved. Thus, it isn’t something people can wear while working in a temple and it isn’t something you can wear under “street clothes”.
God sees us as righteous because He sees us adorned with the blood of His Son that was shed for our sins. He is the One that is worthy, not us by ourselves. Notice the words in Isaiah, “he hath clothed me…” and “he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness…” This takes away any chance that we’ve performed or done any of the work, for He hath done this thing for me.
The only thing in life for sure that we’ve inherited is our sin nature and the only way to rectify this awful thing inside of us is to be clothed in the robes of righteousness provided by Christ Jesus our Lord and our God. He, who knew no sin, became sin so we could be seen righteous in the eyes of the Father – 2 Cor. 5:21.
Sadly for the Mormon, the “robes of righteousness” are falsely found in their temples while performing necromantic works which God abhors and warned us to not participate in.
