Definition of Apostasy in LDS Church
Mormon Doctrine, pg 45; “To the extent that worldliness false doctrine, and iniquity are found among the saints, they too partake of the spirit of the great apostasy. Speaking of men in the last days Nephi said: “They have all gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men.” (2 Ne. 28:14.)
It follows that if members of the Church believe false doctrines; if they accept false educational theories; if they fall into the practices and abominations of the sectarians; if they use tea, coffee, tobacco or liquor; if they fail to pay an honest tithing; if they find fault with the Lord’s anointed; if they play cards; if they do anything contrary to the standards of personal righteousness required by the gospel — then to that extent they are in personal apostasy and need to repent.”
Colossians 2:16-17; “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”
Yeah…playing Uno, Cribbage and Goldfish are really bad things to participate in…good grief!
I often wonder what the apostle Paul would’ve said to Mr. Smith about his rules and regulations?
And how could Nephi say things about people not following Jesus when Jesus hadn’t been born yet? It was supposedly 559 BC!
If having coffee or tea would send me to hell then Jesus died for nothing – Gal. 2:20—21.
Hey Michelle! I didn’t know the Mormons consider playing cards a sin. Now I know why *** would not come out to our house after Thanksgiving and after my husband’s funeral. *** came out to the house with the rest of the family. He is or was my party organizer and he organized a game of spades – actually a tournament and *** kept calling for him to come back to the motel with her and Lila. The rest of the family did not take too kindly to him leaving being pressured by her. Yes, I voted last week. May the Lord be with this country. Blessings.
Hi!!!!
When I was a kid I spent the majority of my life at my grandmother’s. Now my grandmother had 13 siblings so we were always visiting family somewhere in Utah and not everyone was active LDS. The one thing we did all the time with her siblings was play Liverpool Rummy. Every single one of her siblings knew how to play and it was a beloved game for everyone. When we visited several of her sisters and their husbands who will remain nameless here, they would close the curtains in their kitchens when we’d sit down to play Liverpool. These particular siblings were very active temple Mormons but there was NEVER any gambling going on and I just couldn’t understand why playing a simple game was a sin.
Ironically I’d go to MIA or Seminary and it was okay to play games like Dominoes or Monopoly with dice or Scrabble (letters in a bag, another game of “chance”). So where do we draw the line?
I just don’t see God sending me to hell because I played Goldfish with my kids or Cribbage with Kirk. And yep, my kids love Liverpool Rummy! 😉
I know that in OT times the children would play a game with sticks – sorry I don’t know the name of the game they played – but reference of it was made in Matthew Henry’s Commentary for Ezekiel 37:16 – all this to say that games can be played but the only time God condemns this type of activity is when it’s tied to gambling. A very resourceful site to check out is http://www.bible-history.com/isbe/G/GAMES/ where you’ll find tons of info on the history of Israel. 🙂
We’re still praying for the kids. Give me updates when you can!
Michelle
