No Polygamy, No Kingdom of God
Journal of Discourses 24:229-230; “He [Joseph Smith] has told us about our associations hereafter. He has told us about our wives and our children being sealed to us, that we might have a claim on them in eternity. He has revealed unto us the law of celestial marriage, associated with which is the principle of plural marriage. This you will see is strictly in accordance with what I have told you Joseph Smith told the Twelve—that if this law was not practiced, if they would not enter into this covenant, then the kingdom of God could not go one step further.” – John Taylor, “Selections from his Discourses delivered in the Various Settlements”
Mark 1:14-15; “Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
As we’ve seen and studied before on this subject, the Kingdom of God isn’t a physical or geographical area. The Kingdom of God is simply the rule of God. God’s Kingdom runs independent of man’s behavior and is not in existence because of anything man does or doesn’t do. Men cannot contribute to the reign of God. God’s in charge of it and runs it all by Himself. He is the Ruler and we are the subjects.
The Kingdom or Rule of God is something God extended over human lives through the ministry of Jesus.
People can make the Kingdom their first priority (Matt. 6:33), they can repent and believe the good news or the kingdom as it says in Mark above, and we can pray for it to come soon – Matthew 6:10.
The Kingdom of God is an invitation to everyone regardless of their monetary or religious status and Jesus said the tax collectors and prostitutes would enter it before the religious or moral people would – Matthew 21:31.
In light of all that how could the Kingdom of God stop existing if people stopped practicing polygamy?
Secondly, this “proclamation” if you will, by Mr. Taylor is nothing more than another false doctrine and prophecy. Not only is the Kingdom of God still rolling forth today, so is the Mormon Church. They stopped practicing polygamy completely in 1904 and here we are more than 100 yrs later with the Church still going.
Thirdly, polygamy is not from God. It’s not a commandment of God. It’s not a covenant issued by God. Polygamy is nothing more than man’s idea of wanting control over both women and other men and a way to further satisfy their lustful desires.
