Cataclysmic Events at Jesus’ Death
Today we’re looking at the discrepancies in the number of hours it was dark at Jesus’ death. Tomorrow we’re going to look at the timing of what was going on when.
Helaman 14:20; “But behold, as I said unto you concerning another sign, a sign of his death, behold, in that day that he shall suffer death the sun shall be darkened and refuse to give his light unto you; and also the moon and the stars; and there shall be no light upon the face of this land, even from the time that he shall suffer death, for the space of three days, to the time that he shall rise again from the dead. 27 … darkness should cover the face of the whole earth for the space of three days.”
It was dark for three days…
3 Nephi 8:5, 19; “And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land. 19 …they did last for about the space of three hours…”
It was also dark and stormy for three hours…
3 Nephi 8:23; “And it came to pass that it did last for the space of three days that there was no light seen…”
No, but really it was dark for three days…
Matthew 27:45; “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.”
Mark 15:33; “And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.”
Luke 23:44; “And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.”
In God’s word we have three very reliable witnesses who all testified to the same event. While gathering eyewitness testimonies for an event can sometimes show different perspectives we can see with this event not a thing was different. Everyone testified to the same thing.
There was darkness over the earth for three hours.
In Helaman’s passage we read about an angel who testified there will be darkness for three days and then in 3rd Nephi we read that it was dark for three hours and also three days.
How does that happen?
If this angel was sent from God to testify and give signs of what was to come wouldn’t it be reasonable to believe that we could trust his message? These two accounts are so opposite of each other the only thing we can do with them is toss the whole thing (Book of Mormon).
