Doctrines of Salvation, 2:43; “In order to obtain the exaltation we must accept the gospel AND all its covenants; AND take upon us the obligations which the Lord has offered; and walk in the light and the understanding of the truth; AND ‘live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God’” – President Joseph Fielding Smith (emphasis mine)
Ephesians 2:8-9; “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Wow this doctrine of salvation has some issues!
1, What does the phrase take upon the obligations God has offered mean?
If it’s an obligation is it really an offer?
2. What if I fall short on one of the obligations or one of the words of this god? Does it mean I won’t be saved?
Because Mr. Smith grew up in a polygamous household (his father was Joseph F. Smith and his mother was the second wife of six wives), he advocated spiritual polygamy so does this mean that I must do the same to be saved? This man who was the 10th prophet of the Church was widowed two times and had all three of his wives sealed to him for eternity in the temple.
