Journal of Discourses 1:50-51; “They [the gods] came here, organized the raw material, and arranged in their order the herbs of the field, the trees, the apple, the peach, the plum, the pear, and every other fruit that is desirable and good for man; the seed was brought from another sphere, and planted in this earth. The thistle, and thorn, the brier, and the obnoxious weed did not appear until after the earth was cursed.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, April 9, 1852
Genesis 3:18; “Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.”
Oh Brigham, Brigham, Brigham where might these stories come from?
In the Lord’s omnipotent, awesome power He supplied us with the things to sustain ourselves physically and didn’t have to rely on ol’ Adam to bring stuff on over from the planet he used to live on.
I’ve always found it very intriguing how God is so incredibly powerful and yet keeps some things simple enough for us to take notice. Case in point is this example today. There’s nothing complicated with what God did even though it was miraculous! He provided our food in the very place we’d inhabit and yet the complexity of His work is amazing indeed!
And His word says the earth wasn’t cursed until after Adam fell so how could it have changed if Adam already brought the “elements” over? Did Adam go get more stuff from another planet? If God didn’t have sufficient power to create it out of nothing then how could He have power enough to curse it with new plants?
How sad for the Mormon people to be tricked in such a manner.
Many have told me it’s silly to post teachings of past leaders as the Mormons of today wouldn’t know these things. So here’s my response to such comments.
While someone like my mother may not know Brigham taught this the people of his day obviously did. Those people in turn taught their kids and so on. The teachings adopted by those people affected their spiritual attitude and when they did this it taught the younger generation how to view God.
Furthermore, when teachings like this evolved into something new their hearts were already hardened to truth so it wouldn’t matter what the teaching was, the point is that it was false.
