History of the Church 5:402; “The Lord deals with this people as a tender parent with a child, communicating light and intelligence and the knowledge of his ways as they can bear it. The inhabitants of the earth are asleep: they know not the day of their visitation. The Lord hath set the bow in the cloud for a sign that while it shall be seen, seed time and harvest, summer and winter shall not fail; but when it shall disappear, woe to that generation, for behold the end cometh quickly.” – Joseph Smith, May 21, 1843
Genesis 9:13-16; “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.”
I grew up believing that Noah was the angel Gabriel (see LDS reference below) so when I became a Christian, discovering the truth about Noah when I read my daughters’ children’s bible was a shock. I’m sure it sounds outrageous, but my experience isn’t all that much different from many other ex-Mormon testimonies.
The best thing about today’s dilemma is the truth found in God’s word that you can share with a Mormon! Share your awe and enthusiasm about how God has kept His promise. The Noahic Covenant is unconditional; meaning that no matter what man does it won’t move God from being faithful.
The rainbow is a constant reminder to us of God’s faithfulness. He hasn’t destroyed mankind by a worldwide flood since then. It’s also a reminder of God’s grace when He extended salvation to Noah and his family from the ravaging waters. This should remind us there is salvation for us through His Son Jesus from the wrath to come – 1 Thessalonians 1:10.
Another reminder in the rainbow for us is that God is a holy God who hates sin and won’t allow it to go unpunished forever. There will be a day when God will destroy the earth through fire (known as the “day of the Lord”) – 2 Peter 3:10-11, Revelation 20:9, 21:1.
As we’ve pointed out many times before, Joseph Smith took every doctrine and teaching of God and lied about it. He took just a little truth and twisted it enough to make it something totally against everything God stands for.
Mormon Doctrine, pg 301; “To play his part in the great restoration of all things, Gabriel came in modern times and conferred the keys of his dispensation upon Joseph Smith. As with other angelic ministrants to this earth, Gabriel also spent his mortal probation here. He is Noah, the one who stands next to Michael or Adam in the priesthood hierarchy. (Teachings, p. 157.)” – Bruce McConkie
