Journal of Discourses 3:247; “Watch yourselves and think. As I observed, on the evening of the 14th at the social Hall, ‘think brethren, think,’ but do not think so far that you cannot think back again
In the eastern country there was a man who used to go crazy, at times, and then come to his senses again. One of his neighbors asked him what made him go crazy; he replied, ‘I get to thinking, and thinking, until finally I think so far that I am not always able to think back again.’ Can you think too much for the spirit which is put in the tabernacle? You can. Let this intelligent part labor to excess, and it will eventually overcome the tabernacle, the equilibrium will be destroyed, and the whole organization deranged. Many people have deranged themselves by thinking too much.” Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, March 16, 1856
Romans 12:2; “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
If people didn’t think things through maybe more of us would still be in Mormonism. Praise God that didn’t happen!
The Church likes to control everything its members do from the time they open their eyes to the closing of them at night. It’s much like they control what you do and at what age – everything about your life has their agenda attached and if you don’t heed their counsel then you’re the apostate.
It reminds me of their 13 Articles of Faith, 14 Fundamentals in Following the Prophet, 16 Points to a True Church and the 167 Missionary Rules. Everything is attached to something else so they can keep everyone in line. These things keep members so busy and their attention so zeroed in on their works no one has time for the Lord!
It’s just a numbers game to them and has nothing to do with the biblical principles our Lord put into place for us through His word. You can read about some of their agendas in our page on this subject “It’s a Numbers Game” here.
