Mormon Doctrine, p 343; “See CAIN, EGYPTUS, NEGROES, PRE-EXISTENCE, PRIESTHOOD. Through Ham (a name meaning black) “the blood of the Canaanites was preserved” through the flood, he having married Egyptus, a descendant of Cain. (Abra. 1:20-27.) Ham was cursed, apparently for marrying into the forbidden lineage, and the effects of the curse passed to his son, Canaan. (Gen. 9:25.) Ham’s descendants include the Negroes, who originally were barred from holding the priesthood but have been able to do so since June, 1978.” – Bruce McConkie
Genesis 5:32; “And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth”.
Strong’s Talking Bible/Concordance and the Holman Bible Dictionary describes Ham and defines his name this way;
“The same as <H2525> (cham); hot (from the tropical habitat); Cham, a son of Noah; also (as a patronymic) his descendant or their country”. – Strong’s Talking Greek and Hebrew Dictionary
“Following the Flood, he discovered Noah, his father, naked and drunken and reported it to Shem and Japheth (Gen. 9:20-29). When Noah learned of the incident, he pronounced a curse on Canaan the son of Ham. Ham became the original ancestor of the Cushites, the Egyptians, and the Canaanites (Gen. 10:6).” – Holman Bible Dictionary [emphasis mine]
In our example from the Bible we see that because of Ham’s behavior, God cursed his son Canaan. The Bible doesn’t say anything about God cursing Canaan with a dark skin. Good grief. Canaan’s father (Ham) was apparently already dark before he sinned against Noah. Thus, his given name meaning hot.
Mormons also teach that a woman (Egyptus) discovered Egypt and that too proves to be a false prophecy from what our text says.
Now with our understanding of what God says, let’s look at the Mormon text.
“Through Ham (a name meaning black) “the blood of the Canaanites was preserved” through the flood, he having married Egyptus, a descendant of Cain.”
“Ham was cursed, apparently for marrying into the forbidden lineage, and the effects of the curse passed to his son, Canaan. (Gen. 9:25.)”
If Ham was already black then what does his skin color have to do with the sin he committed against his father Noah?
Where in the Bible does it say Ham was cursed for getting married? By the time this incident took place Noah’s sons were already married. Wouldn’t he be cursed when he got married and not cursed when he found Noah naked?
The Bible clearly says he was cursed for telling his brothers Shem and Japheth about finding his father naked, aka gossiping and openly shaming his father.
Genesis 9:22, 24-25; “And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. 25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren”.
Ask the Mormon in your life for their opinion about this!
that quote should be on your “embarassing mormon quotes” list for sure as the Hebrew word for black is “shakur”. It doesn’t have any of the same letters!!!
🙂 I agree to a point. If I had a category for most embarrassing all the quotes would have to be there…sigh…
