History of the Church 4:211-212; “…it is generally supposed that sacrifice was entirely done away when the Great Sacrifice [i.e., the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus] was offered up, and that there will be no necessity for the ordinance of sacrifice in future; but those who assert this are certainly not acquainted with the duties, privileges and authority of the priesthood, or with the Prophets…
The offering of sacrifice has ever been connected and forms a part of the duties of the Priesthood. It began with the Priesthood, and will be continued until after the coming of Christ…
These sacrifices, as well as every ordinance belonging to the Priesthood, will, when the Temple of the Lord shall be built, and the sons of Levi be purified, be fully restored and attended to in all their powers, ramifications, and blessings…” – Joseph Smith, October 5, 1840
Hebrews 9:12-14; “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. 13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
…How much more shall the blood of Christ purge your conscience…
I discovered the passage in Hebrews about a week after I got saved. I had decided to start reading the Bible and began in Hebrews of all places. I read the book of Hebrews several times yet the one thing that kept repeating itself in my head was ‘….how much more shall the blood of Christ purge your conscience…’
I still had a lot of Mormon in me at the time and I knew I loved Jesus then just as I had loved Him as a Mormon. That part never changed. What did change is my understanding of all He did for me and the weight of it finally began to sink in.
How much more did He have to do? Was giving His life not enough? When will the good works end if it didn’t stop the day He died?
The Mormon Church said that those who aren’t acquainted with their priesthood ordinances aren’t aware the sacrifices must continue, so in all humility I have a question for the Mormons.
Is Jesus aware of your priesthood ordinances? If so, then why did He give His life for you?
The problem here isn’t that Mormons like to do good things. This isn’t the issue. The problem is that they’re unaware of what sin is, what God requires for sin and the pride they hold in believing they play a major part in redemption. Mankind has no part in redeeming mankind.
That job is filled – by God.
